What is TPC?
The Parenting Center, Inc. (T. P.C.) is a 501(c)(3) established in December 2000 in DeKalb County, Georgia.
Who Owns TPC?
No one person owns any nonprofit organization. TPC has a board of directors who directly oversees its operations and an Executive Director who oversees the day-to-day operation of the center. Dr. Shirley McGee Fannings and Rev. Travis D. Frazier are the founders of the center. Travis serves as Executive Director and Shirley serves as President of the Board of Directors. Other board members include Curtis McGee, Mattie Matthews, James Thompson, and Attorney Verlis Jones.
What does TPC Do?
TPC provides three (3) primary services. First, it provides educational services to parents -- offering training opportunities for grandparents, foster parents, single parents, and co-parents. The classes are designed to address critical parenting skills in child discipline in all forms of parenting styles. Secondly, TPC provides opportunities for parents (and all adults) for skill development training in anger management. The aim of these classes is intended to provide insights into the process of experiencing and managing anger arousal from any provocative situation. Thirdly, TPC provides community service supervision with the state and county court systems. The community service workers provide valuable office support for the center. Additionally, TPC offers after-school Reading Tutorial to students with reading deficits. This program is primarily for remedial reading students in grades 2 through 5.
What Areas Does TPC Serve?
TPC has satellite classrooms in five (5) targeted counties in Metro Atlanta. Cobb, Clayton, DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett Counties are now served. The center offers services (classes) within each targeted county.
How is TPC Funded?
TPC and most nonprofit agencies rely heavily on charitable contributions and fundraising events. However, TPC has three (3) primary sources of funding. First, the "fee for service" approach is one of the primary sources of funding. Agencies and individuals pay for services rendered. Educational classes, clinical services, and reading tutorial services are offered at each satellite classroom location. Secondly, membership drives are held quarterly giving parents and the general public an opportunity to support the mission of the center. Thirdly, the center hosts fundraising events, musical concerts, banquets, and other collaborative efforts with businesses, community agencies and grant funding resources.
What Relationship Does TPC Have With The Mass Media?
TPC has an ongoing radio outreach program for parents on KISS 104.1 FM with host Twanna Black, the Public Affairs Director for the station. This exciting 30-minute program covers a wide variety of topics for all parents. TPC airs PSA's and other training formatted programs on the radio and TV markets in Metro Atlanta.
Is TPC Affiliated With Any Church or Religious Group?
No! TPC is independent of any religious group. TPC has office space in some Churches and business establishments. However, TPC is not subject to accept management input or oversight from any other body except through the board of directors. TPC forms collaborative partnerships with churches, social service agencies, and schools on programs and consulting services.
Why Does TPC Maintain a Website?
TPC has maintained an active presence on the World Wide Web since its first year of existence. The site is currently being reconstructed as an interactive E-commerce site to include a bookstore, log cabin rental reservations, eNewsletters, current class schedule & registration option, membership registration with a free parenting booklet for members, E-pledge option, and other valuable information for parents.
